Granite Gold Inc. is a family company with a long history of stone care expertise that spans three generations, dating back to the 1950s. Co-founders and cousins Lenny Sciarrino and Lenny Pellegrino grew up in the family business, manufacturing, installing and restoring stone surfaces in homes and businesses throughout Southern California.

Their passion for stone care is in the family blood lines. Their grandfather, Leonardo, came to the United States in the 1950s, bringing with him an Italian heritage known for expertise in the stone industry that he passed on to generations. Lenny S.’ father, Pete, spent 10 years learning the art of fabrication and installation before opening his own company with his wife, Kathy, in 1978. That family business, European Wholesale Countertops, is where the cousins were taught the craft – Lenny S. learned all there is to know about fabrication and installation of natural stone; Lenny P. took that training in building Pellegrino Stone Care, founding it more than 20 years ago to address the restoration and maintenance end of stone care.

While the Lennys were in the family businesses manufacturing, installing and restoring stone surfaces, time and again, customers would ask “What should I use to clean my stone?”
There really wasn’t anything in the market they could recommend with confidence. Common household cleaners will damage natural stone, and anything marketed specifically for use on stone either left streaks and fingerprints or wasn’t readily available for our customers to easily purchase. Mild dish soap and water was all the cousins would recommend, and it still wasn’t the best answer.

They began experimenting in the late ’90s to find an answer to customers’ questions, and a few years later came up with a solution that was safe on all stone surfaces since they vary in porosity and density and would not streak or leave fingerprints.

With the answer in hand, the cousins were filling bottles and handwriting “Cleaner” or “Polish” on them, giving them away after finishing restoration and installation projects. That soon led customers returning, asking for more of the magic formula. Granite Gold Inc. was formed in 2003, and in 2004 the Lennys set out to bring Granite Gold® brand stone-care products to a mass consumer audience.

They started small with local distribution in the San Diego area and going on the road with how-to demonstrations at regional home and garden shows and in Costco club stores. Then, in 2005, the cousins led a national consumer awareness campaign on the dangers common household cleaners pose to natural stone surfaces. That catapulted word of mouth and online sales in Granite Gold®’s early days, and soon after the cousins recruited consumer packaged goods expert Scott Martin, Granite Gold®’s chief operating officer, who had spent 16-plus years building global sales and distribution at WD-40 Company and rising through the ranks to senior vice president of global sales.

Desire for Granite Gold® products and stone care advice and knowledge continues to grow year after year, and today Granite Gold® brand stone-care products are available in grocery, hardware, mass merchant and specialty store channels throughout the U.S. and internationally.
