Caring for granite countertops and all other natural-stone surfaces isn’t as complex as many people believe. The first line of defense is avoiding common household cleaners. Whether it’s a glass cleaner or an all-purpose cleaner, they typically contain ammonia and other harsh ingredients that destroy natural stone’s protective seal. Once that happens, stone is at risk of damage and you’ll face expensive repair or replacement. Sometimes the protective seal is already damaged and you may not know it. Here’s what you can do to find out if the seal is intact: Regularly check the integrity of the seal with an at-home water test. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface in several locations and let it sit for 30 minutes. If the water penetrates the stone – look for a dark mark or ring – it is time to reseal. Frequent use maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil build-up. We recommend allowing the sealer to dry for 24 hours to make sure it cures to the granite or other natural stone. Please read our Three Easy, Essential Steps blog post for recommendations on cleaning, sealing and polishing.

Oil Stains (vegetable/olive /cooking oils, etc.): Mix baking soda with acetone into a paste and place onto the stained area. Allow to sit for 24 hours. Remove and rinse with water. Repeat if necessary. Stone should be re-sealed when completed. Organic Stains (food products, mold, mildew, plant runoff, dirt/soil, urine and pet stains): Take a paper towel or cotton balls or white terry cloth towels soaked in liquid bleach (any brand) and place on stained area. Allow to sit for 24 hours and rinse with water. Repeat if necessary. You may spray bleach on stained areas and scrub with a soft nylon brush then rinse with water. Bleach does not harm natural stone as long as it is rinsed each time and sealed/maintained properly (acids harm stone). Rust Stains: Most rust stains have to be removed by a professional. Pour or spray 3 percent or 4 percent hydrogen peroxide on the stained area and agitated with a safe-on-stone scrubbing pad or nylon brush (also safe on stone) and allow to sit for 24 hours, then rinse with water.

Polishing adds shine and luster to granite, marble and other natural-stone surfaces, and quartz surfaces such as Silestone, Corian and Cambria. Regular use after cleaning will bring out stone’s natural beauty and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. Polishing shower walls and tub surrounds will help prevent soap scum build-up. Do not use on floors, which can become slippery. Granite Gold Polish® is an easy-to-use spray-and-wipe formula. Hold the bottle 6-8 inches from surface and spray; buff with a dry paper towel or lint-free cloth; then wipe dry with a paper towel or lint-free cloth.

Most typical, everyday household cleaners, including glass cleaner, soft scrub cleansers and all-purpose cleaners are not ideal granite cleaners or for any other natural stone surface. They contain ammonia or other damaging chemicals that will break down the protective seal and damage the natural stone’s surface, leading to costly repair or replacement. Granite Gold® brand products are safe to use on any natural stone surface.

Use the Granite Gold Daily Cleaner® followed by Granite Gold Sealer®. It is safe to polish your freshly sealed natural stone 24 hours after applying Granite Gold Sealer. Regular polishing after cleaning will bring out stone’s natural beauty and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. Polishing shower walls and tub surrounds will help prevent soap scum build-up. Do not polish floors, which can become slippery.

The protective seal wears over time. Regularly check the integrity of the seal with an at-home water test. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface in several locations and let it sit for 30 minutes. If the water penetrates the stone – look for a dark mark or ring – it is time to reseal. Frequently sealing granite countertops and all other natural stone maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil build-up.

Granite Gold® brand granite cleaners and other stone-care products are specially formulated to protect any natural stone surface, including granite, marble, limestone, travertine, onyx and slate. Granite Gold can be used on any finish, including polish, honed, sandblasted, etc., and the products are safe for use on manufactured stone surfaces such as ceramic tile, porcelain tile, concrete, Corian, Silestone, Terrazzo and Formica. Manufactured stone does not need to be sealed. Granite Gold products will not damage polished nickel or chrome hardware and faucets.

Granite Gold Shower Cleaner® is the safe alternative for stone and tile care. Use instead of household shower and bath cleaners which can damage natural stone. Regular use will help prevent mold, mildew, soap, and hard water deposits from attaching to the surface.

  1. For stubborn mold and mildew: use a solution of one part bleach* (any brand laundry grade) and one part water. Spray or pour onto the area scrub with “non-scratch” nylon pad or bristle brush. Allow to sit for 15 minutes and rinse with water. This will not harm the stone or tile. *Use bleach according to instructions on the bottle.
  2. For stubborn water deposits or soap scum: Use Granite Gold Shower Cleaner with a white or blue non-scratch scour pad. These pads are gentle enough to remove deposits without damaging the stone or tile. Scour 3-5 minutes and rinse with water. If the deposits or soap scum is a heavy build take a new single edge razor blade and shave the material off the stone or tile with the flat part of the blade.
  3. Remember to frequently seal your shower with Granite Gold Sealer® and use our Granite Gold Polish® weekly to maintain the shine and finish. Do not Use the Granite Gold Polish on Floors
  4. Using the Granite Gold Shower Cleaner on a weekly basis will help against the mold and mildew from attaching to the surface.
  5. Mold and mildew need moisture to survive. After each shower be sure to leave the shower door open to ventilate and dry your stone or tile.
  6. It is also recommended to squeegee the walls to allow the stone to dry faster.
  7. Some showers have pooling water in areas that over time can pit or oxidize the stone.

Use Granite Gold Disinfecting Wipes®. An important note about disinfectants: Most people don’t realize a disinfectant needs to sit on a surface for at least five minutes for it to properly take effect. Don’t polish your stone until you rinse and clean the disinfected area; otherwise, streaking will occur.
